How To Inspect Your Brake Pads

To check your brake pads, park on level ground and turn your steering wheel fully to one side to expose the brake components. Look through your wheel spokes toward the brake rotor (large metal disc) and locate the brake caliper sitting over it. Using a flashlight, examine the brake pad material sandwiched between the caliper and rotor. Compare the pad thickness to a quarter—if your brake pad is thicker than a quarter, you're good; if it's the same thickness or thinner, schedule replacement soon. Look for warning signs like uneven wear, visible metal backing plate, or cracking material. Check all wheels, paying special attention to the front brakes which do most of the work. If you hear squealing or grinding noises, see uneven wear patterns, or can't clearly identify your brake pads, visit a professional mechanic immediately. When in doubt, prioritize safety and get a professional brake inspection.
